Community Service

Community service at MSB is a form of project based learning in which both character education and academic goals are achieved through working within and beyond the school community. Community service is neither an addition to nor a diversion from the school curriculum, but rather a vital part of the students’ education.

All of our students, from Preschool through Elementary, have the opportunity to take part in various community service intiatives throughout the year. These include clothing and book drives, bake sales and our annual Giving Tree event.

In Grades 5 and 6, students have additional opportunities to engage in community service. At the start of the school year, each student is assigned to a class for which they will act as student volunteer. In this capacity, they are able to mentor our younger students, as well as assist our lead teachers. Their duties also include helping organise and lead Sports Day and International Day activities for our Kindergarten and Reception students.

At MSB, we teach our students to be self-starters. In the past, our Grades 5 and 6 students have been instrumental in developing and organising many community-oriented events with minimal guidance from our teachers and administrators. In 2012, they coordinated our first MSB Fun Run, which raised over RMB111,000 (~USD17,000) for charity. For our Recycling Competition, our Grades 5 and 6 students delivered presentations to all of our Reception and Elementary classes Guided Reading Programme on the importance of reducing waste.
